Beagle - making sustainable and ethical shopping easier

Sustainability. It’s good. It’s vital, in fact, and is slowly becoming more of a part of people’s everyday lives. But it can be tricky to ensure that the products you are buying and the companies you are buying from are actually sustainable, at least without spending too much time researching.
There are a huge number of retailers out there, after all, and who even knows when they’re telling the truth about their sustainability and ethics? Wouldn’t it be nice if there was a platform to do that research for you?
UK startup Beagle has built this platform. Beagle is a free add-on for your browser that helps to ensure that your shopping reflects your ethical values.
When you install the Beagle button, you sign up and choose which options you want it to keep in mind, from a range of options like plastic-free, organic, ethically made, and others. Once this is done, you simply shop as you normally would, and the Beagle button searches in the background for better alternatives that meet your selected options. The startup ensures that these alternatives are of the highest quality.
Beagle has defined 5 key pillars of sustainability and displays only products that contribute to at least one of these: Reducing Waste, Minimising Emissions, Supporting Workers, Protecting Animals, and Avoiding Chemicals. They use an evidence-based approach to sourcing products and leverage existing certifications where possible to make sure brands are as good as they claim. The startup’s income comes from the retailers they work with, but they only take payment when a purchase is made, ensuring that retailers can’t pay for priority listing, or to be listed at all - only if they meet at least one of the above pillars will they be listed.
Currently, Beagle is raising investment on Seedrs ahead of their full launch. At the moment, they are in beta, and you can join their mailing list via their main web page for early access to the Beagle button.
