Lava Mae offers a smart solution to help with homeless hygiene
by Startacus Admin
Many of you will have seen the odd pop-up library or bus in your time. Great for helping communities that live in remote areas to gain access to books and learning. But what about a ‘pop-on’ shower bus that provides showers to the homeless? We looked at Lava Mae who are doing just that…
The idea for Lava Mae was conceived when Founder Doniece Sandoval heard the cries of a homeless lady in San Francisco, crying that she would never be clean. Jump forward to the Summer of 2014 and Lava Mae launched its mobile hygiene service in San Francisco (now also LA).
Lava Mae is basically a converted bus, turned shower facility, that has since provided 14,000+ showers to 2,400 people moving through homelessness.
Providing dignity to those that use the showers and also driving awareness about the lack of access to basic hygiene, Lava Mae deserves more than a pat on the back for their social endeavours, and at a time when the world perhaps seems that little bit more selfish and insular - a welcome reminder that innovation and humility can and do go hand in hand.
Check out this Indiegogo supported video below that gives you a little more background on their story to date and also pop on over to the Lava Mae site where you can find out more about their project and plans.
