Odd Coffee Company - the startup that's tackling coffee wastage by offering sustainably-sourced surplus coffee, rescued from British roasters.

odd picThey say that the Earth revolves around the sun. They say that the Earth rotates 15 degrees per hour. We say that it’s coffee that makes the world go round and gives us the sunrise - that spark, that glimmer of hope, that signal that it’s time… Time for coffee. Yes, caffeine is technically poison and yes, our hearts could do with beating with a little more regularity than they do after coffee 2 or 8, but we don’t need to talk about rhat. Yhat. That! Oops…coffee shakes.

oddcoffee bagLet’s instead talk about the thousands of tonnes of coffee that goes to waste every year. This is not due to any actual issue with the coffee, but because too much was roasted, or because of blemishes in the packaging. Surely, something could be done with that?

London-based startup Odd Coffee Company thinks so. Founded during the lockdowns, Odd Coffee Company works with coffee roasters who are environmentally friendly, having earned pro-environment certification marks, and who do not use plastic pods. These roasters pack excess coffee that would otherwise go to waste, as well as that from packing that has dents and scratches, and sell it to Odd Coffee Company. This is then repackaged and sold to the startup’s own customers on about the same time scale as the roasters’ own products, meaning their coffee is just as fresh. The coffee is ‘odd’ because the bags and pods are a combination of all the coffees the startup buys and so, except for the different strength offerings, you will get a slightly different taste in every pack.

When it comes to the pods, these are 100% aluminium, and one of the startup’s goals moving forward will be to create their own home-recycler for these pods. They also hope to expand further into Europe and the US, develop more products and, we can only assume, drink more coffee.
